Call For Papers —“The Fourth International Conference on Formal Approaches to Meaning in Chinese”
2025.04.29
The International Conference on Formal Approaches to Meaning in Chinese emphasizes the use of logical tools (first-order logic, Boolean algebra, lattice theory, etc.) to analyze various semantic phenomena in Chinese. This conference series, with the first held in 2019, provides a platform for scholars to share their latest research findings on Chinese formal semantics. The conference aims to: (i) critically evaluate current theoretical assumptions and existing analytical frameworks of formal semantics; (ii) identify limitations and deficiencies in existing theoretical analyses of natural languages, particularly Chinese, and (iii) promote the theoretical development of formal semantics by proposing new analyses and theories.
The fourth conference, organized by Language Acquisition Laboratory, Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, will be held in Hong Kong on December 18-19, 2025. The conference theme is “Frontiers of Formal Semantics”. We cordially invite abstracts for oral and poster presentations of original, unpublished research work on Chinese semantics including, but not limited to: semantics of nominal phrases, semantics of quantity and quantification, semantics of wh-phrases, semantics of information structure (topic/focus), semantics of negative expressions, semantics of conditionals, event semantics, degree semantics, modality and possible world semantics, intensional semantics, intensionality and indexicals, semantics-pragmatics interface, and semantic acquisition.

Linguistic Seminar on “Understanding Early Child Grammar” by Professor Rushen Shi (Université du Québec à Montréal)
2023.12.01
Professor Rushen Shi of Université du Québec à Montréal will deliver a linguistics seminar on December 12, 2023. Details are as follows:
Date: 12 December 2023 (Tuesday)
Time: 4:30 p.m. -6:15 p.m.
Venue: Room 206, Lee Shau Kee Building (LSK206), CUHK
Abstract:
Functional categories are a crucial part of the grammar. These items are missing in children’s early speech, which is dominated by lexical words. This telegraphic characteristic led to the conventional view that grammatical knowledge is absent during the initial years of life, and that children learn functional items late with the help of their knowledge of lexical words. In this talk Professor Rushen Shi will argue for a contrasting account of grammatical acquisition: the prosody-functor bootstrapping model. She will present experimental studies demonstrating that infants begins to acquire functional items and use them to break into early grammar from the first year of life. Her discussion will also concern the power and limit of distributional learning in language acquisition.
About the speaker:
Rushen Shi received her PhD in linguistics from Brown University, USA. She was then awarded the prestigious Izaak Walton Killam Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, and did her postdoc research in psychology at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Subsequently, she was a professor in the School of Audiology & Speech Sciences at UBC. She is now a professor in the Psychology Department and the Institut des Sciences Cognitives at the Université du Québec à Montréal. She is the director of the Groupe de Recherche sur le Langage (Language Research Group; http://www.gr.uqam.ca).
Professor Shi’s research program focuses on early child language, especially the acquisition mechanisms and representations in infants from birth to 2-3 years of age. Based on her research contributions, she won a major award from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI). She has continuously received grants from the Canadian government, including the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).

The International Association of Chinese Linguistics (IACL) holds an Annual Conference on Chinese linguistics at various institutions in Asia, North America, Europe, and Australia since its establishment in 1992. The event serves as an important occasion for scholars and researchers working on Chinese linguistics across the globe to present original, unpublished research work in all subfields of linguistics on any variety of the Chinese languages or other languages of China.
Due to the pandemic, the 28th Annual Conference of the International Association of Chinese Linguistics (IACL-28), originally planned to be hosted by Zhejiang University in 2020 and held in Hangzhou, has not taken place as scheduled. Subsequently, the Executive Committee of IACL decided that the dates of the 28th Annual Conference of the International Association of Chinese Linguistics (IACL-28) will be moved to May 20-22, 2022, the event to be hosted by The Chinese University of Hong Kong. As the pandemic situation in Hong Kong remains severe, IACL-28 will take place in a completely online manner via Zoom.
